What is the kind of faith that truly transforms a life? Let’s look at two words — one from the Old Covenant and one from the New Covenant — that describe faith. Each of them tells us something important about what faith really is.

🔹 Old Testament

The most important Hebrew word describing faith is “emunah” (אֱמוּנָה). It means: steadfastness, certainty, faithfulness, an unshakable posture of trust.

Emunah does not describe an emotion or a wish. It is the stable, certain posture of a person who rests on who God IS and on what He has said.

From the root of this word comes the word “Amen,” which means: so let it be, this is certain, this is firm. It is not a religious phrase. Every time you pray and speak this word, you are speaking words of faith. The root (‘aman) means, among other things:

  • “to be stable like a support beam,”
  • “to stand firm” — as in Ephesians, regarding the soldier’s armor: “stand firm…”
  • “to lean on,”
  • “to bear something with your full weight.”

The conclusion is that faith, from the Hebrew perspective, is a lasting trust in God that leads to action in agreement with His word.

🔹 New Testament

In the New Testament, the key word is “pistis” (πίστις), meaning:

  • trust, certainty
  • a conviction that comes from God’s testimony
  • a faithful response of man to God’s goodness
  • obedience born out of conviction of the truth

In the New Testament context, pistis is ALWAYS connected to action, not merely intellectual agreement. The most important related words are:

  • “pisteuō” — to believe, to rely on, to trust
  • “pistós” — faithful, trustworthy
  • “peithō” — to be persuaded, to be obedient (showing that faith produces trust that leads to action)

The conclusion is that in the New Testament, faith is a conviction rooted in God’s authority, which reveals itself in life through obedience, certainty, and trust.

🕊 The Biblical Definition of Faith (Combined)

Faith is CERTAINTY based on God’s character and His Word, LEADING to action in agreement with what God has revealed. It is not a feeling, not optimism, not hope, and not mere religiosity. It is a person’s response to God’s revelation, to God’s Word.

Faith is most fully expressed in chapter 11 of the letter to the Hebrews:

“Now faith is the ASSURANCE (Gk. hypostasis — a “foundation, a stable structure beneath one’s feet”) of things hoped for, and the CONVICTION (Gk. elegchos — evidence, an inner certainty) of things not seen.” – Heb 11:1

This means faith is certainty before you see the results of that action. Faith is evidence before the outcome ever arrives. Faith that transforms is not a delicate feeling or a spiritual inspiration. It does not rest on a momentary emotional high, religious zeal, or positive thinking.

True, biblical faith HAS THE POWER to change a life, because it is rooted in the ONE who NEVER CHANGES — in God Himself. It is not based on a person or on a passing world, but on God’s Word, and therefore it is unshakable. It does not wait for circumstances — it changes circumstances, because God working through faith is greater than anything visible. It transforms our thinking and moves us into practical action. Faith that transforms:

  • breaks old, internal patterns of thinking
  • sets us free from fear and uncertainty
  • transforms character
  • leads to obedience
  • activates God’s promises
  • leads to a life of victory, rather than merely reacting to problems

💬 Quotes on Faith from Well-Known Authors

“Faith is acting now. Faith doesn’t wait to see something — it acts because it trusts the One who is speaking.” – Smith Wigglesworth

“True faith does not merely believe that God can. True faith believes that God will.” – Andrew Murray

“Faith begins where our own strength ends.” – Watchman Nee

“Faith is looking beyond what is visible toward what is eternal — and living according to that reality.” – A.W. Tozer

“Faith sees the invisible, believes the incredible, and receives the impossible.” – Corrie ten Boom

“Faith is the bridge between God’s promise and your future.” – Charles Spurgeon

“The great works of God are accomplished not by great men, but by men of great faith in a great God.” – Hudson Taylor

🏗️ Faith Needs a Foundation

The tallest building in the world, the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, stands 828 meters high and is so tall it can be seen from 95 km away — yet its height is not the most important part of its construction. What matters is not what is external and visible to people, but what cannot be seen: its foundation.

What you see is not the key — what lies beneath it is! Sometimes we look at someone else’s life, their healings, their miracles, and we admire them. We would love to see the same things in our own lives, but do you see that person’s foundation of faith? Are you investing in your own foundation of faith?

The foundation of the Burj Khalifa is made of 192 piles driven 50 meters into the ground. Fifty meters is the height of a 16-story building — just imagine that driven into the earth! How tall a building do you live in? I once lived in a 10-story building, on the seventh floor, and that already felt quite high.

More than 45,000 cubic meters of concrete were poured into that foundation — the equivalent of 18 Olympic swimming pools filled with concrete. A structure like that can withstand earthquakes and storms.

The truth is, the higher you want to go, the deeper you need to be rooted!

In Luke 6:47–49 Jesus says:

“Everyone who comes to me and hears my words and does them, I will show you what he is like: he is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. And when a flood arose, the stream broke against that house and could not shake it, because it had been well built. But the one who hears and does not do them is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. The stream broke against it, and immediately it fell, and the ruin of that house was great.” – Luke 6:47-49

So the foundation of faith is not our feelings, our emotions, or our own experiences, but who God is! Who Jesus is, what He is like, and what He has done for us.

🧱 Faith Rests on Knowing God

We need to know who God is and what He is like. The Bible tells us that God is good, faithful, near, unchanging, holy, trustworthy, and loving. No one has ever seen God, but His Son Jesus has shown Him to us and revealed His character.

“No one has ever seen God; the only begotten Son [Jesus], who is at the Father’s side, he has made him known.” – John 1:18

You cannot trust someone you do not know. That is why faith does not begin with a miracle, a feeling, or an experience. Faith begins with knowing the character of God. If, for example, you know that God is good, then you know that He wants to help you and heal you! If you were born into a wealthy family, you know that you can afford anything!

🧳 The Example of Abraham

Abraham is a model of faith — not because he knew exactly where he was going and what God intended to do, but because he trusted Someone who knew how to lead him!

“By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out… and he went out, not knowing where he was going.” – Hebrews 11:8

Notice that God did not show Abraham a map. He only showed him Himself. Faith that transforms says: “Lord, I don’t need to know everything. It is enough that You know!”

🔥 How Can You Strengthen Your Faith?

1. Read the Word of God. It is fuel for faith. There is no strong faith without the Word of God.

“So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.” – Romans 10:17

2. Pray, talk with God, and let your heart be transformed. Prayer is not about persuading God — it is about meeting with Him. Prayer changes us, not God.

3. Be obedient to His words. Without obedience, faith remains only a theory. Every act of obedience builds the next. Every true authority is born out of obedience. It’s like climbing a staircase — Jesus says, “Take a step,” and once you take it, the next one opens up.

4. Trust God’s timing. Faith does not mean everything happens quickly. Sometimes faith is hardest exactly when you need to wait. Practical faith is the sowing of seeds that, in time, produce a harvest.

🧭 Practical Pointers

True faith does not shine brightest on the mountaintop but in the valley. Faith is not “seeing better circumstances.” Faith is seeing God above your circumstances. When the doctor has no solution, the job disappears, the doors close, the relationship falls apart, the prayer has not yet been answered…

Faith says: “God, I don’t understand, but I trust You.” Faith is an anchor for the soul (Heb 6:19), and the story of George Müller from the 19th century shows us this. This man ran orphanages in which he fed more than ten thousand children without ever asking anyone for money. He prayed, trusted God, and saw miracles every single day.

One morning the children sat down at an empty table. There was no bread, no milk. Müller said, “We thank You, Lord, for what You will give us.” At that very moment, a baker knocked on the door: “Mr. Müller, I woke up in the night and God laid it on my heart to bake bread for your children.” Right behind him came the milkman: “My cart just broke down in front of your house — will you take the milk before it spoils?”

This is faith that transforms — it is based on God, not on circumstances!

  1. Ask yourself: do I really believe, or am I just watching from the sidelines? Do I believe God, or do I merely believe that God exists?
  2. Take one step of obedience. One step — for example: forgiving someone, calling someone, being confident for healing, starting to pray, making good decisions in line with faith.
  3. Meditate on the Word of God. Faith does not grow by accident. It is born from hearing the Word of God.
  4. Speak to your circumstances with God’s Word and revelation, not with people’s opinions.
  5. Decide to trust God in one specific area: finances, health, relationships, the future…

Take a step toward God today. Don’t look at what you see. Look at the One who sees everything.

🙏 Closing Prayer

“Lord Jesus, thank You for calling me to a faith that does not rest on what I see, but on who You are. Give me faith that transforms. Strengthen my heart, my foundation, my trust. Help me to be obedient, even when I don’t understand. I want to follow You — just as Abraham did. I want to live by faith, not by what I see. Today I give You my life and my decisions. You are my Rock. Amen.”
